The Port of Houston Authority is committed to continuing an ongoing dialog with the many communities surrounding the Houston Ship Channel. We believe in contributing to the quality of life in our local area and continue to develop meaningful partnerships with our various external stakeholders.

We strive to support our region through helping others increase their understanding of Port operations and its contribution to the local economy. Individuals and groups can take a free tour of the Houston Ship Channel on the M/V Sam Houston. Schools and other organizations can request a speaker. Other teacher resources are also available online, with information and activities for all ages.

The Port Authority remains actively engaged in the community through volunteer efforts and financial or in-kind sponsorship support. Our sponsorship priorities include: maritime commerce, economic and workforce development, environmental awareness, and community outreach.

We are committed to being a responsible neighbor and community member in the region, and maintaining that commitment is an important part of our work.

The Port of Houston handles about 70 percent of all the containerized cargo in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The Port of Houston Authority’s container handling facilities are among the finest in the nation, providing efficient and cost-effective service.

The general cargo terminals of the Port of Houston Authority can handle any type of cargo a ship or barge might bring. From grain to steel to refinery parts to locomotives to wind turbines and blades, nothing is too difficult for the general cargo terminals to handle.
